Hurricane Michael Field Observations

Next stop on our damage assessment tour: Carrabelle and St. George Island.

Carrabelle

Located east of the eye, Carrabelle was on the “dirty side” of the storm and in many ways incurred more significant damage than St. Georg’s Island which was also east of the eye but closer.  This was because Carrabelle’s homes were almost entirely of much older construction with many homes built at ground level.  Storm surge and flood action cause significant damage in Carrabelle and although wind was present flood damage was found to be much more prominent.

St. George Island

St. George Island is a barrier island south of the city of Apalachicola.  They clearly suffered significant storm surge along the Gulf Coast and along with associated flooding.  Certain areas of the island incurred deep flooding and it would be hard to imagine that, at the height of the storm, the entire barrier island would not have been entirely under water to some degree.

Most of the homes observed on St. George Island were elevated and little flood water was able to enter the living space as elevation heights were sufficient.  There were, however, numerous examples of wind effect on many of the homes and, in fact, homes showed both flood and wind damage together.  At the time of our inspection, access was allowed only for residents and first responders, however, we were able to convince the local sheriff deputies that CAT field adjusting sufficiently qualified to allow access.
